I am thrilled to be teaching music for the second year at Lake Carolina Elementary. I'm also excited about teaching  all of the students at the Center for Achievement this year.   I have been an employee in Richland School District II for 23 of my 29 years of teaching. I am originally from Conway, SC…the gateway to Myrtle Beach.   My Bachelors of Arts degree in Music Education K-12 was awarded from Columbia College, and I did my graduate work at USC in Educational Administration.  I am a National Board Certified Teacher and  have served twice as a Richland II Teacher of the Year.  My two daughters, Heather ( 24) and Courtney (21) and my husband, Dennis and I love to travel.   I am looking forward to working with all of the Lions from the Center for Achievement as well as the Great Gators at Lake Carolina!

Throughout the year, I will be adding some links to programs that we will be using during class, and also some interactive sites that your child may find fun to experience to extend knowledge learned in the classroom. One such site is sponsored by Carnegie Hall and is an interactive website to learn the instruments of the orchestra through the study of Benjamin Britten’s famous piece “Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra.”  Click on the following to connect to this site.

University of South Carolina Strings Program

Lake Carolina Elementary once again has the most participants in the entire Midlands area!!

At the beginning of the school year, our 3rd graders attended a program sponsored by the University of South Carolina Strings Program.   This is an after-school program that offers string instruction for elementary students in grades 3-5. Our 4th and 5th graders attended this program last year, but are welcome to register for lessons as well. Classes are held weekly on the USC Campus in downtown Columbia. Adults can take lessons, too!!

If you would like more information about this program, contact Gail Barnes at the University of South Carolina Music Department.

Lake Carolina Elementary School Chorus

The Lake Carolina Chorus got off to a great start this year with a record-breaking 101 members!  They are working on their December musical called “December in Our Town,” which will be presented at the PTO meeting on December 10th at 6:30.

The chorus will be going off-campus on October 8th to see the Tony-award winning show, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, which is being presented by our district high school performing arts magnet school, the Palmetto Center for the Arts.  Permission slips need to be turned in ASAP.  If you’d like to see the show on your own, it will be running from Oct. 8th – 11th at Richland Northeast High School, at the district auditorium.  Shows are Thursday,Oct. 8-10 at 7:30 PM, and Sunday Oct. 11th at 3 PM.  Tickets are $7 adults and $5 for students.

Morning rehearsals continue for the chorus.  4th graders rehearse on Monday and Wednesdays and 5th graders rehearse on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  All morning rehearsals are from 7:30 – 7:55 in the music rooms.
