Tips For Parents

Take time to listen, talk, and read to your child.

Accept some speech mistakes as your child learns.

Don't ask your child to slow down and repeat.

Talk naturally to your child; simplify your sentences and words, but don't use baby talk.

If your child's ability to communicate does not meet your expectations, seek the advice of a speech-language pathologist.

Have your child's hearing tested on a regular basis if she has frequent ear infections. Ear infections can cause temporary hearing loss. If hearing is impaired, speech and language may not develop at a normal rate.
